Carlos J Martinez
My name is Carlos J. Martinez and I was born in Cuba. I am a professional dancer graduated in the National School of Ballet "Alicia Alonso" in Havana Cuba where I achieved a high academic level of professional dance. I formed part of various competitions as well as international dance festivals where I worked with important choreographers and dancers including Fernando Alonso, Carlos Acosta, Assari Prisestky, Mijail Barishnikov. I was member of the Company "Ballet de Camagüey" in Cuba dancing as a soloist in "Coopelia", "Giselle", "Flores en Genazo" and many more. I formed part of the dance company "Danza Contemporañea de Cuba" as a dancer and was involved in many projects with dancers and international choreographers including Sasha Waltz, Rafel Bonachela, Juan Cruz, Mats Ek, Leo Kramer, Isik Galily, Janis Claxton, Miguel Iglesias, Jose Manuel Carreño, Andy Zondag and Others. I also went on international tours with the company receiving the "Luna" award for "Carmina Burana" at the National Auditorium in Mexico City. During my time at "Danza Contemporañea" Dance Company I also began to teach the professional dancers and started to create my own choreographies. I was one of the founders of two dance projects "Ebony" Dance Company and "MalPaso" Dance Company. While involved in these projects I had the opportunity to collaborate with the Joyce Theatre of New York and National Ballet of Cuba, where I became a choreographer, principal dancer, teacher and artistic director. I also participated in many competitions including the Iberamericano Ballet "Alicia Alonso" where I was awarded with a special nomination as dancer of the choreography "Anoxia" and also became one of the finalists in the Gran Prix Vladimir Malakhov with my own choreography "Equilibrium". During this time I was offered several scholarships to France and USA.
